This project chronicles the history and heritage of East Baltimore’s historic American Indian “Reservation.”
In 2016, Ashley Minner Jones (Lumbee) began to formalize a very brief walking tour of the American Indian community of East Baltimore. In conversation with her elders, she came to realize there were many sites of significance no longer recognizable on the landscape or prominent in public memory. Through collaboration with these elders and other community members, extensive archival research, generous support from funders, and the efforts of an amazing creative team, the Baltimore Reservation Project was realized and made public in 2021 in the form of these free, public resources:
The Guide to Indigenous Baltimore mobile walking tour apps for Apple and Android was produced in collaboration with Elizabeth Rule (Chickasaw).
Safety in Numbers: Portraits of East Baltimore’s “Reservation,” a related virtual archival photo exhibition curated by Tiffany Chavis, Ashley Minner Jones, and Stanton Lewis (all Lumbee), was launched in 2023.
